Wonderful historical fiction

gps review Beneath a Marble Sky ebook

Beneath a Marble Sky ebook

I was lucky enough to see a review of this book online, and upon reading the glowing review, decided to immediately get a copy. I spent most of the weekend reading it, and just finished it a few minutes ago. I was so moved by the book that I decided to write my first review on Amazon.

Simply put, this is an amazing story. I've never been to India, but this novel took me there, and introduced me to the Taj Mahal, which I am now longing to visit. This is a powerful, beautiful story. And the fact that it's based on true events made turning its pages even more enjoyable for me.

Anyone who is a fan of historical fiction (as I am) should read this novel. The author managed to re-create a rich period in history, and did so in a very subtle way.

After finishing this book, I was reminded of how I felt after completing Memoirs of a Geshia. Both books took me somewhere new, and made me cry more than a little.

It's almost impossible for me to be critical of this book. I loved it that much. My only slight disappointment was that there wasn't a map up front.

However, the book is beautiful inside and out, and I'd highly recommend it.

A really fun and memorable product

printed pencil skirt review SKY LANTERNS Pack Assorted Colors

SKY LANTERNS Pack Assorted Colors

I read up on these lanterns and was excited about using them for my daughter's 5th birthday party, a Rapunzel theme. We went out to my parents' house because they live on lots of land. I faked my confidence in this product to assume my mom, dad, husband, and the other skeptical adults that these were fine and not a risk to the nearby farmland, woods, or houses. I was secretly very nervous, but all for nothing. They were perfect, and beautiful! I want to do them for all of our birthdays now. It does take at least 2 adults to light each one. One needs to hold the lighter, and the other the lantern. They take a minute or so (which is longer than you think when you're holding these things) to inflate properly. We had one adult hold each lantern and one other adult go person to person to light them. 2 of us then rotated and helped hold them as they inflated. They are bigger than I expected. If you want them to go up simultaneously, you will need multiple lighters.

I totally recommend trying this if you are interested. It is great, and we will be doing it again!

Steve Roach's "Dreamtime Return" is the first ambient soundscape album I purchased back in 1988. Unfortunately, I was too young to appreciate its brilliance until my mind could fully realize the true diamond of pure ambience I had "stumbled" upon. Initially, I was attracted to the cover, but failed to realize the timeless harmonies I had acquired, as evidence by its sustained price. Roach was never able to duplicate the timeless, totally agreeable and mystic collection of tracks, all recorded in Australia with naturally made instruments, including the ubiquitous didgeridoo, pleasantly cast against a backdrop of cave echoes, water drops and indescribable, reverbial twangs that only Steve Roach could create.

Included in this massive, 140-minute ageless collection are sounds of the Aborigines whom Roach befriended during his time in Australia recording "Dreamtime Return," and their haunting, yet pleasant vocals burst forth on "Red Twilight with the Old Ones," a track that could never be duplicated with such originality, such respect for the oldest civilization on earth. I've found that the year doesn't matter. I drop the attitude, close the door, put on the headphones with REPEAT ON, and drift off to a time and place from which I sometimes never want to leave. Roach has struck gold with "Dreamtime Return," and its perfectly balanced waveforms are nothing short of theraputic. Stress, impatience, frustration, rage--all negative emotions--completely dissolve with even one uninterrupted session of "Dreamtime Return," either Disc 1 or Disc 2 on its own or in tandem. "Dreamtime Return," in my book, can even cure insomnia with its matchless blend of pure musical frequencies, like dessert for the brain. No other ambient album comes close, except perhaps "Quiet Music," which caught the coattails of "Dreamtime Return", having very similar qualities, yet distinctly different patterns.

But we must be clear on one thing: "Dreamtime Return," or any other album that Steve has produced has nothing to do with "New Age," and would probably be offended at such a label. No. Soundscape is the proper term, if the genre must be pegged, because it is exactly that. Mr. Roach takes his sounds and shapes them in unison with the landscape. No other artist of our time understands his own work better. I'm sure that if I would have somehow missed Roach's recordings, either through neglect or indifference, the quality of my life and well-being would have suffered. "Dreamtime Return" is the pure essence of what ambient soundscapes were meant to be, and it will never leave my collection. It's as good today as it is tomorrow. I feel sad for those listeners who fail to realize that.

I am extremely sensitive to light when I sleep. Before I had this mask, I would lower the shades over the windows in the next room, close my bedroom door, lower the shades over my own windows, cover the windows again with a black out curtain, shut my eyes, AND put on a sleep mask, and I would lie awake thinking "it's as if i am staring INTO the sun."

No more. The Lewis N. Clark Comfort Eye Mask has several features that really help it get the job of blocking light done. Its most important virtue is the cushion of fabric below the eyes to the sides of the nose. Most sleep masks are held up by my nose such that there's a space on either side. The Lewis N Clark mask can block out 100% of the light there, at least as far as I can tell. Occasionally, I will roll over or something and the tiniest bit of light will come in (still much less than would come in under a regular mask) -- so the mask is not God, but I think we all knew that. Second, the mask wraps around pretty far on the sides of the face to make sure light is blocked from those angles. And finally, unlike other masks that eventually become too loose, the adjustable elastic band on this one lets you tighten the mask to keep every part of it pressed to your face. It can get too tight, but that is of course a sign that you should loosen it, and I find you'll still be in darkness. I assume the band on this mask will eventually weaken, but then you just tighten it! And when it finally gives out altogether, I'll just buy another one. It's great and it's cheap.

My only regret is that I have but two thumbs to put up for this mask.

Stark Revelations of a By-Gone Era are Revealed

ring Steal My Sunshine ebook

Steal My Sunshine ebook

It all started over an argument about the Christmas tree on the last day of the school holidays during a stinking hot February afternoon in the midst of a Melbourne heat-wave.

Beginning with Hannah's present day narration, we are introduced to this fifteen-year old girl trying to come to terms with the inner turmoil that threatens to overwhelm her as she tries to find her place in the world and her family. Constantly in Sara's firing -line, Hannah is at a loss to understand why the relationship between her mother and older brother, Sam, is so different to hers; why Sam so blatantly attempts to divert their mother's attentions from her; why she is the only one who seems to care so deeply for her grandmother; and what's up with her mother and father!

Arriving at Essie's house, we are introduced to Hannah's eccentric and agoraphobic grandmother, and unreliable narrator, as she plays a trick on her unsuspecting grand-daughter and grand-son, causing a tirade of epic proportions by Sara when she discovers what has taken place. Afterwards, whilst making a cup of tea for Essie, Hannah comes across a hidden letter and, after guiltily reading it, asks Essie about "James". The conversation concludes with Essie whispering the promise of a secret.

Late for an appointment with her best-friend Chloe, Hannah heads off to meet the only friend she has, one who comes from a broken family, her mother having walked out when she was six-years old, never to return. Living with her father and brothers, one of whom Hannah has a crush on, Chloe is mature beyond her years and believes that Hannah's life is a fairy tale compared to hers. Finding herself relating the events of the day to Chloe, when all she wants to do is tell her about the feelings she has for Evan, and looking forward to Tuesday night movies with her dad, Hannah receives a text message from her brother urging her to get home. Arriving at home with a suitcase hindering her entry and a devastating announcement delivered by her parents, her life is thrown into further turmoil as the door slams on possibly the only ray of sunshine in her life.

As we see Hannah dealing with her inner struggles - the possibility of first love, her social ineptness, Chloe's stand-offish attitude towards her and the family drama playing out since her father's departure - her chain-smoking, gin-tippling grandmother's narration begins at Chloe's first visit with Hannah, and we are taken on a "disgraced" fifteen-year old girl's journey from her wealthy family in fog-filled London, aboard a ship headed for Australia and an aunt who declares that she is unable to "save" her, to a convent where she is put to work in the laundry while she awaits the birth of her baby. As Essie relates her painful past, a shocking familial relationship is finally defined, shedding light on Sara's antipathy towards Essie and perhaps the relationship between Hannah and her mother.

A shameful part of Australia's (and many other countries') shadowy past is exposed as Essie's in-laid narrative goes into vivid detail of the harsh treatment that many young "fallen" and "morally endangered" women, unsupported by their families, had to endure at the hands of the Nuns who ran the "Magdalena Laundries/Asylums" as well as the cruelty behind the victims being denied their fundamental rights to love and care for their children by being forced to go through the process of adoption, sometimes with their consent being obtained through forgery or fraud.

These stark revelations of a by-gone era brought a tear to my eye and resonated strongly with me as it brought to mind my own mother's harrowing encounter when I was born to her in the early 1970's in South Africa. Seventeen and unmarried, a nurse at the government hospital where I was born attempted to convince my mom to allow her (the nurse) to adopt me. My mom in no uncertain terms informed her that adoption was not an option that had ever been contemplated, nor would it be considered, and that she had every intention of taking me home, regardless of her personal circumstances. The difference between my mother and Essie was that my mother has a very close-knit family who supported her during her pregnancy and that support would continue with much love in caring for me - after all, my nursery was already waiting for me at home, the cot, the pram, the layette, the christening gown, an assortment of cuddly toys, having already been purchased.

At one of the feeding times when my mom went to the trolley on which the cribs were brought through, she noted that I was not in my usual crib. Beginning to panic, she approached the nurse and informed her that the baby in my crib was not hers. The nurse merely replied that perhaps I had been placed in the wrong crib, but what she hadn't counted on was the fact that an eternal bond had already been forged between my mother and I at my birth, at the very moment when I was laid over my mom's tummy after delivery, and that while breast-feeding, my mother had memorised every one of my facial features, every hair on my head, all ten fingers and ten toes, and even the very smell of me was already deposited into her memory bank. Informing the nurse that she had already checked all the cribs on the trolley and that I was definitely not there, the realisation must have dawned that my mother wasn't just another "ignorant young girl", but one who was most intent on taking her baby home, because she promptly went into the nursery and brought me back in her arms saying that perhaps one of the nursery staff had been working with me and forgotten to put me in the crib for feeding time!

However, the difference is that Essie did not have the support of a family, one which had abandoned her, and nor was she allowed to bond with her baby after the birth. Even after she is reunited with her baby and runs away, she is ambivalent about this motherhood thing. Her story broke my heart, but behind that story is another - one which will have you questioning how often these things happened, long after the last page is turned.

I really enjoyed this novel and found the split narrative and Emily Gale's frequent use of evocative analogies and metaphors - "I was a kid with a balloon and I'd handed it to the wrong person to hold on to. Now it was floating up to the sky and out of sight" - worked well in conveying Hannah's inner teenage angst in a real and effective manner. When she finds herself in a situation where under-age sex is imminent, for a fifteen-year old, she deals with it in quite a mature manner and makes a sound moral choice and, while Essie's deeper story touches briefly on issues of infidelity, incest - "It was me and Dad. Unholy is why" - and lesbianism, it was the broader themes of "forced adoption" and society's attitude towards women in the 1950's to 1970's resulting in the tragic consequences of a decision which should have been hers to make, which enraged me.

Steal My Sunshine is a lovely YA novel with a good moral message behind Hannah's story. Seen through the eyes of a teenage girl whose greatest desire is to belong and be loved, it is also an aching examination of one woman's shameful deception and painful re-living of a time she would rather forget and another woman's inability to forgive past transgressions and, in light of the recent historic national apology given by Australian Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, to thousands of mothers who were forced to give up their babies by enduring these cruel and sometimes illegal approaches by governments, churches and hospitals, it is a timely novel about the oft-called "White Stolen Generation" - one which will strike a chord with many present day Australians.

This is a novel which I feel crosses over between genres and will appeal to a broad range of readers from 15+ through to adults.

Legend Sky Darts Trilogy ebook

The archipelago that frames the background for this story is reminiscent of Ursula K. Le Guin's Earth Sea Trilogy. The main character, Caspine, shows a strong determination to make her own way in the world, despite unexplainable events, that quickly unfold throughout the tale. There is a fine balance of personal narrative, plots and subplots, with likable characters and just enough description, to support a story line that moves along at a quick pace. One of my favorite quotes in the book that Caspine wrestles with is: "Fate is what befalls us. Destiny is what we're summoned to become. And choice links the two together."

This coming of age story follows in the footsteps of many great tales, Rowling / Riordan / Lewis, but unlike these it feels more personal. I am looking forward to seeing how the trilogy unfolds. As other reviewers have noted the digital copy is in need of proofreading, yet the spirit of the author shines through.

Best Miniseries on Jesus and the Bible yet

sky review The Bible Epic Miniseries

The Bible Epic Miniseries

We just watched the first part of this series and also an interview w/ the producers( Mark Burnett and wife Roma Downey, who played in the series Touched by an angel), which included additional clips. This series is really well done. It is an overview of the whole bible in less than 10 hours, so they had to leave some stuff out, to make it interesting and develop some characters. We felt ourselves drawn into the story. it is very engaging and the producers have done a great job keeping the thread through it all. I love how they connect all the dots and not just put all the stories next to each other. It starts w/ Noah in the ark, but he tells the story of creation and connects Adams and eves sin w/ the flood. They added their own imaginations to it,for example how Sarah would respond to the sacrifice. I also saw a nice clip of Jesus during the interview and Jesus is portrait as a gentle man w/ authority. Roma gets to play the older mother of Jesus( What's exciting, bec I always loved her as an angel in the Touched by an angel series.)Sure it can be graphic at times, but it also could be worse. It's well worth watching. Can't wait to see the whole series.

The Four Corners of the Sky is a very good book to read if you are interested in learning the basic creation story or cosmologies behind many different religions and cultures. The author divides the book into different sections, with related stories in each section which really helps to understand the differences. He talks about a variety of religions, including Maori, Greeks, Egyptians, Incas, Desana Indians, Fon of Africa, and many more. I thought this book was very well written and everything is very straight forward, answering all my questions I had before reading the book. I learned the difference between the various creation stories and now I can explain them to others. I would recommend this book because of how concise the author is with his words and how he keeps the book interesting. At the beginning of each chapter he writes a short paragraph about what you can think about to better understand the story. Overall, great book.

Gamo Silent Cat Air Rifle

I've had this pellet gun for about five weeks and I have really enjoyed it. I'm not a regular shooter or gun person. I made this purchase to take care of squirrels that cause my two dachshunds and my neighbors dogs to bark incessantly. The squirrels have devoured my apricots, peaches, and pears. I am concerned they could get into my attic and really cause problems.

Once I got the scope sighted in I was amazed at the gun's accuracy. I don't expect pellets to be particularly accurate but at about 20 or 30 yards and hand held I can hit within about half an inch of my target consistently. The trigger has a firm pull and maintaining my target in the cross-hairs of the scope is at times challenging.

The rifle is far from silent especially when shooting supersonic pellets. It sounds more like a 22 long rifle. The subsonic pellets are noticeably quieter.

This gun is quite powerful. It is not a toy. Shooters should always be aware of what may be behind your target. I suspect the pellets have quite a range and could injure someone at considerable distance

This fast-paced and riveting novel skillfully melds two separate but closely related story lines. Cat Majors, hiding from gang-involved boyfriend Ty, who beat her and left her lying along a Texas Hill Country back road, finds shelter in the back seat of a pickup truck. The next thing she knows she's thrust into the middle of the large and noisy Creekmore family, whose Christian beliefs and lifestyle are completely foreign to her. Cat doesn't hesitate to take advantage of the family's kindness, especially since she finds head of the household Sky immensely attractive. In the meantime, she's unaware that her beloved younger teenage sister, Dena, has embarked on her own wild and dangerous excursion. Dena's best friend Natasha is pregnant. Natasha plans to run away from home when her stepfather threatens to perform an abortion himself if Natasha refuses to have one. Dena and Natasha head to Dena's step-grandparents in the Hill Country and through a variety of events, the teen girls find themselves floating down a dangerously flooded river, dodging police, attacking dogs, hunger, and near rape by a group of drunk young men. Cat and Dena, through separate paths, begin to learn how to open their hearts to God and accept Him into their lives. Despite the serious subject matter, this book is written with humor and sensitivity. I found myself "on the edge of my seat" to the end, wondering if Cat would finally escape her abusive boyfriend and perhaps even find real love, if the younger girls would survive their ordeal on the river, and what Natasha would decide to do about her baby. This book is listed as young adult, but I think most adults would enjoy reading it as well.

Refreshing and new view of life and struggle.

shoes review Mountain ebook

Mountain ebook

Liu Cixin is an eloquent and technically precise writer, which makes his works a pleasure to read, but in this story, the romantic sentimentality of a civilization struggling against all odds to realize its potential seeps in gradually among the backdrop of technical grandeur, and the reader is caught in breathless wonder of its power. I still have shivers every time I ride to the climax of the story.
Liu is widely recognized as the best SF writer in all of China; after his terrifyingly powerful long trilogy "Three-Body" (an English translation due to come out soon) his fans declared him absolutely the best SF writer in the world. Though this novella "Mountain" does not have the length to match the epic scope of Three-Body, it is no less breathtaking. This is my favourite shorter story from his works, with majestic poetry echoing in the core of the tale.

Only Liu Cixin can fit such an epic into the length of a novella. Totally recommend it.

Celestron NexStar 127SLT Mak Computerized

I have got beautiful, crisp visuals from this scope using my 10mm Baader eyepiece. Star clusters, double stars...Lots of things show up well in this scope and the 5 inch aperture is not like what a 10 or 12 inch dob can offer in terms of light gathering ability and giving you a large image of a planet or whatever your observing but there are some benefits to using a scope like this.

1. Its lighter than larger scopes and very transportable.
2. Larger scopes and faster f # or f ratio may need collimation often, this scope is SOLID! You may never need to adjust the factory collimation on this one.
3. GOTO is handy, but learning the bright stars in the sky and constellations is still a necessity....A Celestron SkyScout can aid in learning the sky. There is even the SkyScout Connect that can hook up from this scope to a Celestron SkyScout and it fills in the GPS, time and location questions for you.

Tips - You'll need dark skies to observe bright nebulae the best! Rechargeable batteries DO WORK..I use duracell. Getting an extension cord and using a power adapter that plugs into a household outlet is a good idea! They have car cig light adapters for power too!

vacuum cleaner review The Sky Is Dead ebook

The Sky Is Dead ebook

I have to say at the outset that I am huge fan of Sue Brown's work. I have read virtually all her offering s and loved them all. Some more than others of course, as is the way of things.

But this particular story of Danny and Harry touched at my heartstring s and took me to a place deep inside myself where I really felt grateful for what I had and for where I'd come from.

Danny is a gay, eighteen year old homeless boy, sleeping rough under a bush and just trying to survive. Kicked out of home when he was sixteen for kissing his boyfriend on New Year's Day, Danny finds himself having to make his own way in what is a very tough world. He trusts no one, doesn't let himself get attached to anyone because he's loved and lost before. He does what he can to survive and some of it he's not proud of.

And then Harry bumbles into his life. Sixteen year old Harry, an innocent in Danny's world, but a boy who makes his presence felt and decides that Danny needs his help. From that point on, their two lives become so intertwined and Danny finally starts to learn to trust people again. Then Danny's heart is broken again and he vows to never let himself be vulnerable again.

It sounds as if Danny is destined for loneliness but that really isn't the case at all. This is an uplifting, beautifully written story, sketched with compassion and love, and a lot of tear jerking moments. The characters are masterfully drawn, with all their flaws and strengths and Danny himself is a wonderfully example of a character that simply breaks your heart and makes you want to hold him tightly and tell him everything will be all right. His strength, his quirks and his ability to rise above his life on the streets is inspiring .
Suffice it to say, I was rooting for Danny to be happy all the way through this book. When he finally manages to find his happiness, in a way I won't tell anyone about as it would spoil your enjoyment of the journey of `getting there', I did shout out aloud in glee that what I'd hoped would happen, happened.

It is a story of adversity and how people can overcome it just by a strong sense of self and help from others who care without judging others for their sexual persuasion or their beliefs and value system. This is something we should all aspire to and promote wherever we can.

The author is a skillful storyteller, weaving a tale of real people in real situations and I applaud her ability to tell us about what's in her imagination in such a way.

Bubble Trouble Margaret Mahy

This book is a beautifully woven together rhyming account of a small town's adventure when a young member accidentally blows a bubble that catches a baby and the baby starts floating away. The whole book uses rhyme schemes and onomatopoeia to tell a story of one town's adventure to rescue a young member. I For teachers, I would say this book would be best to read to younger audiences and to use a lot of various voices and excitement. The pictures are colorful and action filled so young children will be captivated by the adventure. The story flows well and introduces many new characters throughout and ties everything together at the end in a way that the audience can understand and the children can be excited about. The book is the perfect length for storytelling to a young crowd of maybe kinder through second graders.

Acer H6510BD

canon powershot review Acer H6510BD Theater Projector White

Acer H6510BD Theater Projector White

I recently bought the Acer H6520BD projector and a 120" screen. I had read several articles about budget projectors and narrowed my decision to a Benq and the Acer projector. The Acer Projector was $200.00 less and was rated brighter than the BenQ so I made the choice to save the $200.00 and buy the Acer Projector.

I was reluctant to buy a projector, infact I was never impressed with the the picture quality of projectors in the past. I decided to buy a projector due to recent articles noting picture quality and brightness have improved over the past few years.

Review- I have only watched the projector for a limited time, as with any projector the picture will wash out with light. This is not an issue for me as I have a darkened room and mostly watch movies at night. The picture is very bright and colors are crisp, I have to agree with the recent articles that projectors have greatly improved over the past few years. I have a flat screen and older Samsung 67 projection television with a LED light engine(I always thought this was the best projection television made due to the bright LED light). I am impressed with the projectors picture and feel the picture brightness and clarity is in the same class as the flat screen and projection television and this is on a 120" screen.

I have not used 3D yet, so I cannot give an opinion.

Overall, if you are in the market for a budget projector with a bright clear picture, I believe you will be happy with the Acer.

RCA AH16100SR 16 Gauge Speaker Wire

Mark Whiteway is on fire! He not only continues to write great fiction but appears to be picking up some serious steam with this storyline. This fourth novel; Seeds Across the Sky; is a little different than the three previous novels, but just as amazing! This story includes a lot of really important background details about the history of the different races and the events leading up to the current storyline of the other books in the series.
Whether you're jumping into the Lodestone series with Seeds Across the Sky, or a continuing fan of the story, this is a real page-turner!
Many of the new (or rather, quite old) characters portrayed in this cleverly-told Ancient Kellani story hold new and exciting key information regarding the past and future of the inhabitants of the Planet Helvena.
Keris is confronted with some very impressive; and perhaps life-changing; information that will keep you on your toes. Along with being well defined, these new characters are also an impressively likable crew! I've really enjoyed this series so far, and am now legitimately hooked!

Nail Polish review The Sky Is Everywhere ebook

The Sky Is Everywhere ebook

As a school librarian I had heard the buzz about Jandy Nelson's debut young adult novel, The Sky is Everywhere, and knew it would be a perfect companion for my road trip from Florida to New York. It did not disappoint me. I was so engaged that I completed the book by the time I reached North Carolina, our first stop. I loved Lennie and her emotional journey from younger sister to adulthood. The themes of loss of a loved one, sexual experimentation, and young love are dealt with delicately and need to be addressed in young adult literature. The beautiful writing is echoed in the poetry written by Lennie throughout the novel. In its heartfelt way we are lead to an understanding of this character and intensely feel her pain and confusion. This book is a must for the teen literature shelves. Share it with someone you love!

Took my breath away

trailer Hopeless ebook

Hopeless ebook

This was one of the most beautiful books I've ever read. This was the first time I've ever had to put down a book to gather myself. And I had to do it twice. The plot twists will leave you breathless and needing a chapter break.

I fell hard for Sky and Holder right from the beginning. Sky is funny and cynical, her banter with the other characters had me cracking up.

Especially gay Mormon best-friend-in-the-world Breckin.

"I'm Breckin. I'm in an alliance to overtake the public school system and all its minions with your daughter."

I liked these characters and grew to live these characters and then fell so completely in love with Sky and Holder that I don't think I'll stop thinking about this book any time soon.

The way the fun moments are weaved together with the heavier, emotional moments made this book real. I didn't think it was possible to craft a more loving, beautiful guy than Will Cooper. I was so wrong. Dean Holder was wonderful. I actually cried at one of his lines about two-thirds through. I won't ruin it but seriously. Get your highlighter ready.

One of my favorite lines:

"It was all I needed to let go of the awkwardness. A good slap on the ass." - Sky

I can't wait to see what Colleen Hoover has next.

Electronic Arts Inc MONOPOLY Hotels

Ron Rash's short stories stir the mind to, and renew my perception of, the lower classes in the South, their mindset and ills, like no other writer has. Anais Nin said, "What we are familiar with we cease to see. The writer shakes up the familiar scene, and, as if by magic, we see a new meaning in it."

Ron Rash is a magician then. He's a wizard who, without resorting to stereotypes, writes honestly, and for the most part realistically, about depressing subjects while maintaining, perhaps unintentionally, an optimistic air, or Hope. In a short story, he connects you to the character(s) in a way that's rare. One that struck me particularly hard was "The Ascent" in his collection, "Burning Bright: Stories," about a typical 5th grader whose parents are meth-head scavengers from whom he wishes to fly away.

I purchased "Nothing Gold Can Stay" after reading reviews for this and prior books by Ron Rash. Since I've read this, I've bought and read his other short story books (the ibooks) "Burning Bright: Stories" and "Chemistry and Other Stories." I have enjoyed nearly every story in each volume, even the ones that seem to me somewhat far-fetched like "A Sort of Miracle," with Baroque and Marlboro, in "Nothing Gold..." I get a rush as I start each new story and find nearly every one of them provocative of folks and places and what-nots I've known growing up in the Deep South. For short story collections, you can't beat that. I highly recommend this and the other 2 mentioned above.

Sunglasses Review Civil Twilight

Civil Twilight

Like many people, it seems, I first became aware of Civil Twilight not long before this album's release, after one of their songs was featured on a TV show. It's not often that I'm impressed by songs I hear on TV, and it's been quite a long time since I've been this excited and impressed by any new band.

Civil Twilight has crafted a masterful debut album that should make the world stand up and take notice! Its three members are all very talented and wrench gorgeous, evocative music from their instruments like they were just born to play. The vocals soars beautifully and are really a perfect match for everything else going on.

This is modern rock at its finest: somehow both baroque and streamlined at the same time. Comparisons to Radiohead, U2 and even Jeff Buckley are inevitable, but Civil Twilight is definitely unique.

I would recommend this album to anyone, and I can't wait to see what this band will do next.

Cute Penguin, Fun Game

tablet review Mominis Ltd Jelly Jump

Mominis Ltd Jelly Jump

In this game you control a cute penguin that tries to reach the stars (at least that's what it seems based on the intro story).
You start at the deep ocean you try to jump on different jelly fish and other platforms to reach higher, trying to avoid all kinds of enemies on your way to the stars.
The game is very easy to control via the accelerometer of the device and you can use certain power-ups by tapping on the screen.

It starts to get harder to higher you reach and the graphics also change when you reach new places (there are various locations for the sea, sky and space, which looks really cool).

The game gets cooler once you have enough money to buy stuff at the store (you collect money while you play) and you can buy all kinds of cool stuff, such as boosters that makes you fly long distances or martial arts attacks that kill enemies in the levels among other powers.

The game keeps being interesting, thanks to the objectives in the game, every time you start playing, you have 3 active objectives to do in the game.
If you complete objectives, you get money that helps you advance in the game.
There is also a combo system that helps you reach higher scores if you don't miss platforms and you don't jump on the same platform twice.

Overall, the game is really fun and cute and is highly recommended, even if you only have a few minutes to play each day :)

Fantastic Light Pollution Filter!

vacuum cleaner Hoya 52mm Intensifier Enhancer Filter

Hoya 52mm Intensifier Enhancer Filter

There are books out right now that speak of the Autism perspective but none from someone as well known and vocal as Jenny McCarthy. Her book, as well as her celebrity status, will reach a significant portion of the population who may not know what autism really is. They might know a friend or family member who has a child with autism but does not have enough first hand experience to know what that caregiver is going through on a daily basis, let alone know how a child with autism processes information. It will also bring light to the many many books out there by parents who have been through the same struggles (older books like Judy/Sean Barron, Mary Callahan, etc).

I suppose it goes without saying these types of reviews also become a sounding board for many parents, myself included to let others know they are not alone... the average person in public cannot identify a seemingly quiet child (i.e. flat affect) as having autism because of the short period of time they are in contact. It does not mean this child is the same way all the time. People have actually asserted that they could handle our child if it were in their hands since they spent all of an hour with them! The first time my neighbors knew the extent of my child's behavior was when I had to physically remove my child from the house and outside so he would not slam into furniture during a full blown tantrum and hurt himself. He screamed so loudly that grown men came running out of their homes a block away to see if my child was in danger. Trust me, Jenny is not exaggerating any part of her story when I tell you we have experienced rages in our son, especially when something has been introduced into his gut, be it food or medicine; he seems to be unable to remove from his system and can stay for days, even weeks causing anguish for him.

This book isn't about answers or easy cures that worked for Evan McCarthy; every child with autism is different. For us, we knew we had to figure out a dietary balance for his brain, gut and severe multiple allergies and a proper early intervention program. He no longer looks blankly at a wall, stim for hours or sleeps 4-5 hours at a time. We still have a long way to go with education and diet, but we have a little boy who has shown improvement in socialization with his family and teachers because he is feeling so much better.

As Jenny says in the end, this is a book about FAITH, having faith in yourself as a parent to do the best of your ability in seeking help for your child's health and well being. Some male readers (i.e. fathers) may be put off by the disheartening tone she has towards the father of her son for most of the book but we have to remember it is not directed at fathers in general. This is a telling of her life experience so it is rather autobiographical. I highly recommend for people, who are getting this book for parents of children with autism, to read it first before passing it along... so many parents already know what needs to be done, but they need their friends and family to understand too.
